Many COVID relief measures enacted by Congress, including the ability for sole proprietors and gig workers to access unemployment benefits, run out at the end of this month. Congress is expected to finalize a new package in the coming weeks, and A2IM is working to ensure our label members and other true small businesses are protected.
In a letter addressed to congressional leadership, A2IM President and CEO Richard James Burgess hones in on proposals that would either directly help indie labels and the artists they represent, or prop up parts of the indie ecosystem that benefit A2IM labels (e.g. indie venues).
In the letter, Richard also reiterates the exploitative structural inequity of royalty free music for broadcast radio mega conglomerates. Broadcasters continue to receive huge PPP loans (as big as $10 million!), whilst not paying a dime to the artists whose music they play. Yes! It IS absurd!
