SoundExchange is proud to be an ally to the independent music community by ensuring that its music creators are paid efficiently and fairly for their work. We distribute royalties monthly, with the vast majority of royalties paid out within 45 days of receipt from a streaming service. To date, we have delivered nearly $6 billion in digitally streamed royalties to music creators and those who support them.
We have developed technology that turns massive amounts of data into accurate revenue for creators. SoundExchange’s suite of tools, including the Music Data Exchange (MDX), International Standard Recording Codes (ISRC) Search, Notice of Intention to Use (NOI) LOOKUP and CMRRA’s Unclaimed Works Portal, enables creators to claim shares of their copyrighted works, manage their repertoire, understand where their music is being played, and find unclaimed uses of their works so they can be paid what they are due.
SoundExchange also fights for fair royalty payments. Our advocacy efforts helped lead the charge for the Music Modernization Act, and we continue to drive policy that ensures all music creators receive fair pay no matter where their music is used.
Moreover, our advocacy for the independent community goes beyond Capitol Hill and includes petitioning the Copyright Royalty Board to increase rates for digital radio services. In 2017, SoundExchange successfully advocated for creators in a landmark rate proceeding case that resulted in a 41 percent increase in the royalty rates paid by SiriusXM.
