A2IM Statement On Anti-Counterfeiting (ACTA) Agreement

Posted in Press Releases by A2IM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 21, 2010

The American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) strongly supports, and continues to advocate for the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (“ACTA”) and applauds President Obama’s leadership in pushing for respect and enforceable protection of copyright and intellectual property internationally.

As the trade organization representing American independent music labels, our community of content creators contributes greatly to the rich cultural history — and to the economy, including exports — of the United States. But in order to continue creating diverse, compelling music for fans, the artists who make music and those who invest in them must be able to make a living.

A2IM’s members are local businesses and creators from across the United States, often with fewer resources than the companies that profit from the use of our music without our permission. The failure of governments to provide an integrated and strategic response has resulted in severe harm to our industry in general and to independent labels and artists in particular. It is very difficult to imagine any enforcement regime that does not include international cooperation which is the laudable purpose of ACTA.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On IFPI’s “Investing In Music” Report – Statement From A2IM President Rich Bengloff

A2IM President Rich Bengloff issued the following statement today:

A2IM applauds the IFPI’s “Investing in music” report for noting that “investing in music is the core mission of record companies and that no other party can lay claim a comparable role in the music sector”….and that “No other party comes close to the levels of investment committed by record companies to developing, nurturing and promoting talent. One of the biggest myths about the music industry in the digital age is that artists no longer need record labels. It is simply wrong. The investment, partnership and support that help build artist careers have never been more important than they are today.” (more…)

A2IM Statement & Filing With The FCC On Net Neutrality

Posted in Advocacy, Press Releases by A2IM

Perhaps the biggest issue facing the music industry is Net Neutrality.

A2IM has been surveying our members to bring our position into focus and yesterday we filed a statement with the FCC supporting Net Neutrality. Our statement highlights the unique economic needs of the independent music community and the need to balance access versus the need to eliminate illegal acquisition of music.

Below is our press release about the A2IM filing and the actual statement to the FCC.

We seek your feedback and any questions you may have about Net Neutrality or the A2IM statement.

Best regards,

Jim
