Posted in 2009 #29, Editorial, Newsletter by A2IM

The Value of Music

They also treat music as a commodity they are entitled to by right and the level of appreciation of music has declined. At this point we want to turn this issue over to a guest columnist, Rob Miller of A2IM member Bloodshot Records, for his view on the current “fan” view of music called “Music as Dumpster Pizza”, reprinted with Rob’s permission. Who

General George Owen Squier was into firsts. He was a thinker and a doer. The inventor of Muzak was the first to fire a cannon using remote control – giving the men of 1897 goose bumps. He was the first Wright Brothers’ airplane passenger from the United States military, taking to the skies in 1908. He was also the first to design an aircraft for military use – paving the skyway for today’s Air Force. Always moving forward, Squier spent nearly forty years pioneering mass communication systems. The inventor of telephone multiplexing, Squier perfected a technique of transmitting music over power lines in 1922, changing the face of modern music transmission forever. (more…)

Net Neutrality Update: FCC Chairman Supports Net Neutrality

Posted in 2009 #29, Newsletter by A2IM

Net Neutrality Update: The new FCC Commissioner, Julius Genachowski issued a statement this week supporting a “free and open internet” and advocating that Net Neutrality be upheld. The enforcement of copyright and other laws and the obligations of network openness can and must co-exist.” Commissioner Genachowski’s full speech can be read here. (more…)
