Rhapsody Seeking Direct Licenses For Webcast Streaming – Take a Second Breath

Posted in News by A2IM

Word is circulating that Rhapsody is approaching independent labels seeking an extension to their license(s) with sign-off within a week that would allow Rhapsody to use your music to beef up their non-interactive webcasting service (similar to Pandora, Slacker, SOMA-FM, etc.)  where they are currently a minor player, but without the limitations that these other webcasters have to comply with that are valuable to independent labels and artists. Amazon Launches Locker Service – Take a Breath

Posted in News by A2IM

Amazon has announced the launch of their digital music locker service where consumers can store both legally and illegally acquired music.  What is most surprising in this news is that they’ve done so apparently without securing licenses from labels or publishers and no announced plan to share any revenues generated with the creators community.  A2IM received a phone call from Amazon late this afternoon but heard nothing that you couldn’t read in the public news.  It appears that Amazon did not alert any segment of the music industry about their launch in advance and everyone is figuring out what their reaction(s) should be.  We’ll continue to speak and listen to our colleagues on your behalf and report to you what we learn.  Until then our feeling is we should take a breath and find out as much as possible before commenting further.

UCLA’s Entertainment Studies and Performing Arts Program and The Recording Academy join together to connect the best and the brightest executives in our business with the next generation of artists, managers, and marketers of recorded and live entertainment. The digital age has forced massive changes on the entertainment industry; how do you break artists and their work in this brave new world? This in-depth course provides perspectives on this and other vital questions from some of the most influential people in the business, as they directly address new artist development; branding and marketing; building and maintaining a fan base; new strategies for the Internet and wireless technologies; online and digital marketing; touring and merchandising; retail sales; music publishing; film, television, and games; radio and video promotion; and much more. It’s a basic tenet that personal relationships are crucial in any business, and this is especially true in the music industry, which is vastly influenced by a handful of key executives.
