A2IM, the American Association of Independent Music, is celebrating a remarkable showing of independent music labels in the 2009 Grammy Nominations, with 241 out of almost 550 total nominations recognizing independent releases – nearly half.
A2IM Vice President Jim Mahoney says:
“With the 2009 Grammy nominations, Indie labels have truly come of age. Independent releases are nominated in 89 of the 109 categories, including all of the top categories (Best Record, Best Album, Best Pop Vocal Performance, etc.). Multiple categories were dominated by Indies, including Best Pop Instrumental Album, Best Rock Instrumental Performance, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, Best Country Instrumental Performance and many others.
“We applaud the recognition of the success of our community for the artist owned indies like Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe and Alison Brown and Garry West’s Compass Records, the exciting 2009 breakout success of Phoenix engineered by Glassnote Music, and the indie labels that are brands in the musical genres they cover like Alligator Records, Epitaph’s Anti label, Concord Music Group and Naxos Records.
“For every independent, garnering a Grammy nomination is a reward and testament to the tremendous contributions that independents offer to music fans and reflects the hard work poured into supporting these great artists by their labels.”
