A2IM Members: Alert Soundscan About Your Priority Releases

Posted in News by A2IM

We hope that you read our recent Billboard A2IM op-ed on the underreporting of Independents market share in the media ( http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/record-labels/a2im-disputes-billboard-soundscan-s-label-1005057292.story ) Related to that op-ed A2IM thanks Billboard Editorial Director Bill Werde for his progressive stance in publishing the below A2IM Op-Ed in Billboard Bulletin, on Billboard.Biz on-line & in Billboard Magazine despite our chart criticisms. A2IM thanks both Bill Werde and Eric Weinberg of Nielsen Entertainment/SoundScan for taking the time and listening to our views on this issue and we look forward to future discussions.

The next step is to ensure that all of our releases get properly reported to SoundScan as those sales charts are one of the criteria used by radio, retail, magazines, etc. in their decisions as to what artists should garner the most space in their media. There are two ways ensure fairer reporting and improve reported results:

  • If you have a major release coming out alert

  • Help get Independent retailers in your communities registered with SoundScan. These accounts are our bread and butter and help break our artists. If there is a story developing we want it reported and not have bad extrapolations depress our results or have other labels game the system at our expense. Configurations like vinyl, where independents in the alternative, R &B and Electronic areas rule, often are getting underreported and we need that fixed by increasing the number of reporting stores. Related to that Nielsen is using Record Store Day to reach out to retail to improve reporting coverage. Read more here.

The bottom line is we plan to work with Nielsen to improve our indie label profile and will be calling on you to get involved.

A2IM Challenges Billboard Market Share Methodology IN BILLBOARD!

Posted in News by A2IM

For too many years, Billboard and SoundScan have published data showing a disproportionately high market share for the major labels leading digital services, radio, artists, managers and attorneys to think less of independent labels.  The method used to calculate market share has been based upon who distributes the music rather than who signs, markets, and owns the music.  A2IM’s independent label members DESERVE to be counted for their contribution to music industry commerce.

With thanks to Billboard for allowing us the platform to make our case, HERE is Rich Bengloff’s op-ed article stating why market share should be reported based upon ownership.  When calculated by master ownership, independents account for 30% of all sales and 37% of digital album sales – making independents bigger than any one of the major labels.

Please add your comments on the Billboard website and share them with your fellow A2IM members here.
