In the 1990s VP Records was born from the VP music stores as reggae - especially dancehall reggae - was experiencing a surge in crossover popularity. VP Records quickly became the go-to label for dancehall reggae acts as well as other Caribbean musicians looking for an inroad in North American markets. The label grew quickly and was awarded Best Independent Label twice by Billboard within its first nine years of operation. Today it is difficult to think of an internationally known reggae musician who hasn't at least passed through VP - after all, the label regularly releases a whopping 60 albums per year. Although they certainly release single artist full lengths, compilation albums are a major part of the VP approach. The label uses their long running series of comps, Dancehall 101, Reggae Anthology, and Strictly The Best, as both introductions to Caribbean music and culture to new fans and as ways for dedicated fans up on the latest music emerging from the islands between full lengths from their favorites. The Reggae Anthology series in particular includes in depth liner notes to give fans a deeper look into Caribbean musicians, who often receive very little coverage in the music media outside of the islands. VP Records includes Greensleeves Records, 17 North Parade, Joe Gibbs, Penthouse Records, Channel One, Volcano Records, Midnight, Dynamic Records & Powerhouse Records.

The San Francisco based Zip Records story is relatively simple. Our pitch is safe adventure; our name suggests a jolt and the artists on the label provide the kicks. Each release by the label, beginning with the first one in 1998, has hopefully been representative of its genre and every title definitely has been a labor of love by the artists. With releases by artists from Australia, Sweden, the U.S., U.K., Netherlands and many more world locations, the music is defined by accessibility and “independence”. Consisting primarily of pop and rock artists, Zip Records plays it somewhat safe, preferring artists with sparks of creativity and a sense of melody and style that will offend no one and please those who come into contact with the music. The thread which ties together the label’s releases may not be that apparent at first glance, but at least from the vantage point of Zip Records, each title has a sense of place – geographically as well as musically. In the beginning, much of the music came from Sweden (Dorian gray, The Merrymakers, Pineforest Crunch, Safari Season, etc), Australia (The Chevelles, P76, Pearson, The Wellingtons, etc) and the U.K. (thirst, Red Letter Day, Killing for Culture, etc). This covered the years from 1998 to 2004. From 2004 to the present, with the odd band from Serbia and Italy, Zip Records expanded to include more artists from the U.S. (Smash Palace, Ed Rogers, Mary Lees Corvette, Wanderlust, etc) and more recently allied itself with a Dutch label to release and promote Birgit (Schuurman) , Kensington, a balladeer, Jelka van Houten, Samuel Wilson, etc. With distribution through MRI/SONY in the U.S. and Rough Trade in the Benelux countries, Zip Records remains a small label with an eclectic roster of guitar pop, singer/songwriter, punk, hard rock, hip hop and even jazz improvisations by Defunkt trombonist Joe Bowie and Ernst Glerum (due in the fall of 2013)!

Founded in September, 2003 by New York producer and music industry veteran Joachim “Jochen” Becker, ZOHO has quickly distinguished itself as one of the most talked-about and creative voices on the U.S. indie label scene, with 1 GRAMMY and LATIN GRAMMY win each, and several additional GRAMMY and LATIN GRAMMY nominations as well. ZOHO started with the vision of presenting a latin / jazz label with a distinctive “New York vibe” – listen to any group of ZOHO releases, and you’ll hear what’s presently new, fresh and happening in the New York clubs! The label has been fortunate in attracting a unique mix of major, internationally recognized, and mostly New York area based artists such as Ray Barretto, Dave Liebman, Arturo O’Farrill, and Carlos Barbosa-Lima to ZOHO. Additionally, the label is proud to present several young latin and jazz musicians from the dynamic downtown New York club scene, including 2006 Grammy nominees Edsel Gomez and Dafnis Prieto, plus releases by Pablo Aslan, the Stryker / Slagle Band, Rez Abbasi and many others.
