Since 1987, Naxos has redefined how classical music is presented and marketed. Innovative strategies of recording exciting new repertoire with exceptional talent have enabled the label to develop one of the largest and fastest growing catalogues of unduplicated repertoire available anywhere--currently over 2500 titles--with state-of-the-art sound and consumer-friendly prices. Naxos is the brainchild of Klaus Heymann, a German-born entrepreneur and music lover based in Hong Kong. To boost the sales for his electronics equipment company, Heymann began organising concerts of classical music in Hong Kong sponsored by Bose and Revox. When visiting artists involved in the concerts discovered that their records could not be found in Hong Kong shops, record distribution became an additional enterprise of Heymann's company. Another result of the classical concerts was Heymann's marriage to Takako Nishizaki, a world-class Japanese violinist. Heymann decided to make recordings with Nishizaki, one of the first recordings being The Butterfly Lovers Concerto. The recording met with immediate success and sold hundreds of thousands of copies across Asia, compelling Heymann to start HK, a record label devoted to Chinese symphonic music. Success continued, and the desire to record Western repertoire blossomed into Marco Polo, a label offering primarily rare symphonic repertoire composed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. When manufacturing costs of compact discs dropped in 1986, Klaus Heymann saw an opportunity for a budget-priced CD label-a label that could offer customers classical CDs for the same price as LPs. The first Naxos releases were a success, and the young, independent label began to build its catalogue by recording standard repertoire with young or unknown artists. As the popularity of Naxos began to increase with little or no competition from the major labels, the company developed into a full-fledged classical label offering a full range of classical music to beginners and collectors, with little or no duplication of repertoire. Naxos CDs today continue to retail at a cost similar to their original introductory prices. Costs are kept to a minimum by focusing on the music rather than the artist-money is not wasted on expensive artist promotions, and profits are invested into recordings of new music rather than multiple versions of standard repertoire already in the catalogue. Naxos recordings include complete cycles or cycles-in-progress of basic repertoire such as the complete works of Chopin or the complete string quartets of Haydn, but the label also has ventured into rarities and contemporary works, including recordings of repertoire by Joachim Raff, William Henry Fry, and Krzysztof Penderecki. Naxos is also active in the DVD business and now distributes Arthaus and BBC/Opus Arte DVDs world-wide as well as TDK in most major markets, and the company also has begun releasing recordings in the DVD-Audio format. Naxos has been aggressive in the development of educational and outreach materials, specifically designed to introduce new listeners to the joys of classical music. Two resources at the forefront of this effort are Naxos.com, the company's comprehensive music website complete with composer biographies and online listening, and Naxos AudioBooks, the award-winning label which incorporates Naxos recordings of music into fine readings of classic literature. The Naxos label also has gained stature by pioneering groundbreaking projects like the American Classics series. Currently numbering at about 100 titles, the series is set to be the most comprehensive recording project of American concert music ever attempted. Naxos is also leading the field with the landmark Naxos Historical Series. The releases in this massive restoration project are engineered by leading restoration engineers/artists. The series covers all genres of classical music as well as legends of jazz and pop music from the first half of the 20th Century. Other notable Naxos series include Japanese Classics, Spanish Classics, Early Music, Organ Encyclopaedia, the Guitar Collection, and Opera Classics. The catalogue of Naxos World, a pioneering world music label, includes international music of many different cultures and genres, folk, pop and classical alike. Through these and other accomplishments, Naxos has become the World's leading Classical Music label, garnering awards from major music publications including Gramophone Awards and numerous Editor's Choices, GRAMMY nominations, nominations and wins for the Cannes Classical Awards, and AFIM nominations and awards. Naxos offers music lovers a veritable encyclopaedia of music, all at an affordable price.

On what would have been famed country icon Eddy Arnold's 94th birthday, Plowboy Records has launched to celebrate and nurture the legacy of the original Tennessee Plowboy and provide a home for recorded projects that focus on American music regardless of genre. Plowboy's founders are Arnold's grandson and musician Shannon Pollard, author and music historian Don Cusic, and punk legend Cheetah Chrome. The first Plowboy Records release will be a new album from Bobby Bare, the GRAMMY award-winning Outlaw Country artist who has over 30 Top 20 singles. Bobby is currently recording at famed RCA Studio B in Nashville cutting a mix of traditional folk and blues songs, and contemporary Americana with a band that includes Buddy Miller, Randy Scruggs and other members of Robert Plant's Band Of Joy. Also currently being recorded is an Eddy Arnold tribute album, produced by Chrome, that will feature interpretations of Eddy's songs by traditional country artists, alt-country and indie rock bands. "The goal of the tribute album is to raise some eyebrows by matching up artists from multiple genres with signature Eddy Arnold songs," says Pollard. Watch this video of Cheetah, Shannon and Don discussing Plowboy Record's mission: http://youtu.be/bIMOaNL83j4 Eddy Arnold is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry. Psycho+Logical-Records was started Nov. 1999, and has been in business for over 12 years, currently being distributed by Fontana/Universal. Necro started the label because he needed an outlet to release his own music, as everyone was telling him noone wanted to sign white rappers at the time. Master P & No Limit's success contributed to Necro having the fire to take those brave first steps into indie world and every single record Necro has released has been on his own label ever since. The fanbase Necro has now is worldwide with loyal "Necromaniacs" in every country. PLR has released over 30+ releases in 12 years all quality records and never being about quantity. Not only has PLR released every Necro record, but it was responsible for the debut albums of ILL Bill, Sabac Red, Mr. Hyde, as well as other groups & comp records, including mix cds. In 2012 PLR is set to release a collaboration album between Necro & the Legendary Kool G Rap, the group is called, The Godfathers. This is the first time KGR has done an entire album with another rapper, and Necro is producing the entire project himself, in fact, every beat released on Psycho+Logical- has been produced by Necro since day one, no outside production allowed. Necro is a big fan of business legends like Sam Walton, Ray Krok, etc. and it took years for these businesses to grow and become what they are known as today. PLR is just starting to get warmed up, and has made so many mistakes that success is right around the corner for this indie label still going strong after 12 years. Quite Scientific is an independent record label based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Founded in 2006 by Justin Spindler, and brothers Brian and Jeremy Peters, it all started out with a simple idea to release some compilations of local acts in an effort to shine a light upon the talent within southern Michigan's music scene. Overnight it seems, QuiSci ( /kwī-sī/) evolved into the full fledged indie imprint that it is today (though we still haven't gotten around to putting out those comps). Though we have grown to include many artists from outside of the Michigan area, we still find ourselves focusing on the Midwest musicians, aesthetic, and general good atmosphere that seems to permeate the air surrounding the Great Lakes; we have beards, wear plaid, and enjoy a band that doesn't take themselves too seriously.

Artists on S-Curve have sold over 14 million albums, including hits such as “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne, “Check Yes, Juliet” by We The Kings and the first two albums by British soul singer Joss Stone. Throughout its rich history, the recording industry has produced genuine and innovative independent label owners. It has been said, Fred Munao, founder and CEO of Select Records since 1981, is among the best of those urban and pop music pioneers. Over the last two decades, Munao has been responsible for breaking chart-topping, genre elevating acts such as UTFO, Kid 'N Play , The Real Roxanne, Chubb Rock , Whistle, and AMG. Other past roster artists include the platinum act The Jerky Boys, revolutionary rap group M.O.P., R&B diva Nerissa, charismatic dancehall heartthrob Shawnie Ranks, and alternative rocker Mike Peters , ex-lead singer/songwriter of The Alarm . Select expects the next generation of artists to continue the ongoing success the label has endured. "Our success can be attributed to an emphasis on artist growth and development, which was clearly reflected in the expansive careers of acts like UTFO, Kid 'N Play, and Chubb Rock," the Brooklyn, New York born and raised Munao explains. "For us, in addition to having hit singles and albums, longevity is also a key focus. When readying an artist for release we are always thinking in terms of artist staying power. Therefore, we constantly work on and encourage our artists to hone their writing, recording and performance skills. Some even develop strong studio production ability. All of this, he further informs, "adds up to distinctive, self-contained artists, whose true talent and mass appeal can be limitless." Munao's pre-Select days were filled with memories and experiences that helped shape his current success. His father was a musician whose band became local favorites around the family's close knit Brooklyn neighborhood. "My dad encouraged me to play an instrument but I couldn't get into that, although I loved music per se," Munao recounts. "The recording end of it fascinated me though. Even way back then I remember wondering why certain records were hits and others were not. I must have been vocal about it too, because one day a record producer friend of my father's said I should be in the business." Although he didn't respond immediately, a summer or so later, Munao went to work at his dad's friend's production company. He became its (non paid) general manager. However, in lieu of salary, the invaluable knowledge and experience he gained during his tenure there, and later working at music publishing companies, set the tone and the table for his next pivotal career move-artist management. Munao successfully managed two rock acts in the late 70's. The hottest was a Boston based group called the Atlantics, which he took from total obscurity to touring with such rock legends as Roxy Music, Cheap Trick, and Boston. Despite the group's popularity during the "New Wave Rock" era, Fred's dissatisfaction with the lack of label attention to the Atlantics planted the seeds for him to start his own independent label. "My feeling was that I could do it just as bad as the majors," he advised. "Yes, marketing, promotion, and distribution all sound pretty complicated and difficult to do on your own, but I never thought I couldn't do it. I knew good timing was also important, and that it's hard for any label, major or otherwise, to work too many acts. From the beginning my focus was on the quality of the artist and the music, not the quantity of acts I could have on my roster." In 1981, in a New York City apartment, Select Records was born. The brain¬ child of Munao and Joseph Fleury, Select has since evolved into a force in the world¬wide record industry. While searching for the perfect niche that would make Select what it is today, the label started out with its hand in a bit of everything. With the very first signings of such diverse acts like The Swinging Madisons (rock), B.J. Johann (country/ pop), Gary Private and Earle Mankey (pop), Select was making noise. About a year later, Fred Munao "hit the streets" and discovered what rap music was about. With a new direction in mind, rap being the focus, UTFO was signed. UTFO, considered as one of the forefathers of rap, carved a path for many others to follow. Daring to mix rap with the heavy metal sounds of Anthrax, this group kept with the Select maxim of originality as well as accessibility. Practicing the early methods of the original A&R function, Select put its feelers out and quickly developed a roster impressive enough to catch the attention of public and industry professionals alike. Soon to follow was an industry explosion of rap records, with Select in the thick of things. Response records became the new rage. Select artist The Real Roxanne, hit the charts with her response to UTFO's hit, "Roxanne, Roxanne." With the right marketing techniques and the proper backing, Select made Roxanne more than a fad. She became one of the first female rap stars. Select has nurtured and developed many acts, bringing them to the top level of excellence and notoriety. One of many success stories for Select is the group Whistle, a hit rap group with the smash single, "Just Buggin'. Whistle has accomplished the much desired position of a Top Ten/Crossover act. Whistle is now recognized as an influential R&B group and praised for their harmonizing talents. One of the most familiar names in rap history is Kid 'N Play. Kid 'N Play have yielded many hit singles and gold records for Select. These stars of stages became stars of screen as well. With the "House Party" movie series came an even greater level of success, surely earning Kid 'N Play the title of most recognized rap duo in the world. Originally starting with the concept of producing EP's only, Select had moved on to produce hit albums and singles as well as EP's. In fact, Select had expanded so much that it started Active Records for its dance acts and Mondo Music for the heavy metal acts. Although Select has stayed in touch with its founding premise of diversity and originality, it has maintained a focus for marketability. Select product can be found in every major chain store, as well as popular "Mom and Pop" music stores. Select product is distributed through ADA and is well accepted in major cities internationally as well. Through the intense efforts of Fred Munao and the specialized staff Select has produced over the years, Select had risen from a concept to a reality. It had carved a name for itself in record history, and will continue to venture into new and exciting areas. As long as there are new and creative artists, Select will be there, influencing the course of music and trends for others to follow.

The Silva Screen Music Group is a London based independent record company which is home to one of the world’s leading film and television specialist soundtrack labels, Silva Screen Records. Founded by owner and MD Reynold D’Silva in 1986, the group retains a catalogue of over 500 titles and over 10,000 master recordings and has offices in New York and Paris. The company’s repertoire of original soundtracks spans a wide range of titles, ranging from the Gerry Anderson catalogue (Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet), the cult TV series The Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe to reissues of classics such as John Barry’s score for The Ipcress File and the music for the cult film The Wicker Man. It also includes contemporary major film and TV successes such as Blade Trinity, The Departed, Dear John, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and six bestselling score albums of the music from the current Doctor Who TV revival. Core to the company’s business however has been the extensive programme of re-recording film music from the past 100 years. Most music scored for cinema in the Hollywood era and beyond had been ill-served when commercially released. Tracking down the composers themselves, unearthing lost music manuscripts, contacting relatives and the estates of these musical geniuses has been a labour of love for the company. Initial projects included new recordings of the complete scores of The Big Country and Lawrence Of Arabia, all released to critical acclaim. The result is a film and TV catalogue of close to 3,000 tracks, digitally recorded and played by outstanding musicians, which breathes new life once again into some of the most evocative music ever written. Key to the plaudits received has always been that the recordings are created with the listener in mind as a stand alone work rather than just a film score. The company has also branched out into other musical forms with great success. The now world renowned soprano Lesley Garrett signed to the newly formed Silva Classics label in 1993 and enjoyed massive sales success throughout the decade. Amongst her numerous gold and silver albums for the label she received the Gramophone Award for Best Selling Classical Artist Of The Year for the release Soprano In Red. Other artists include The Brodsky Quartet and world renowned Chilean tenor Tito Beltran. The acquisition of the famed jazz/world label CMP – Creative Music Productions has added material by artists of the stature of Jack Bruce (Cream), Andy Summers (The Police), Trilok Gurtu and David Torn to the roster. HipBop records began life in New York in 1994 as an outlet for contemporary jazz/funk/fusion and established itself as a cutting edge label whose featured artists read like a roll-call of legend. They include, Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan, Tom Browne, Lenny White, Bob James, Gato Barbieri and Patrice Rushen. The Times Square label in the US has been another successful Silva Screen venture. A highly respected world music roster, its artists, past and present include critically acclaimed performers such as the Portugese singer Mariza, Miami based Cuban singer, Albita and Portugese artist Sara Tavares. Silva Screen’s label imprint So Recordingslaunched in the autumn of 2010 with debut release, Long Live The Duke & The King by The Duke & The King delivering an immediate chart placing on The UK Chart Top 75 Albums and a top 10 Indie Chart berth. Since then the roster has continued to expand and includes American singer/songwriter par excellence Joshua Radin who has enjoyed top 40 US chart action and made a major impact in the UK on the charts with his fourth album Underwater. The Chevin are set to follow this road to success, a Yorkshire four piece who have won over critics and fans on both sides of the Atlantic with their shimmering anthemic sound that has led to major UK and US TV appearances including Late Show With David Letterman. Their cheer-leading song Champion is the soundtrack to the Premiership Football Season 2013-2014 for William Hill’s mobile betting TV campaign. Danny & The Champions Of The World led by Danny Wilson are the real deal, a genuinely rare species, a rock ‘n’ roll band who deliver pulsating riffs alongside songs with timeless melodies and heartbreaking ballads. The god-like sound of Canadian band Zeus is a magical synthesis of the music of yesterday and today with rambling twists whilst all-out Aussie rockers All Mankind have been blowing the roof off venues all round Europe in the last twelve months. And if that’s not enough, Yorkshire alt-rock band Dinosaur Pile-Up are fast establishing a solid live reputation worldwide after the launch of their critically lauded album Nature Nurture. The label will grow even stronger this autumn with the second album titled Music To Make Boys Cry from singer-songwriter Diana Vickers, whose debut single and album topped the charts in 2010. Two years on from the formation of the label, SO What? launched in the autumn of 2012 with the signing of chart topping, platinum selling, singer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Matt Cardle. It proved an immediate success with his sophomore album The Fire hitting the UK top ten and registering at number one on the Independent Album Chart. The autum As the music industry evolves at a breath-taking pace Silva Screen remains at the forefront with their entire catalogue of recordings available for download and recordings being marketed and promoted worldwide for usage in advertising, TV programmes, mobile ringtones, synchs and feature films. 25 years after its formation, the company has lost none of the passion that drove it into being with innovation and quality the constant.

In the early 1960’s, Eugene (Gene) Lucchesi, Sr. founded The Sounds of Memphis Studio and productions. Over the next few years his company started several publishing companies: Beckie Publishing, Il Gatto, Sounds of Memphis and By-Gene Music; all Tennessee Corporations. He also started his own recording labels: Crystal, X-L, Pen and SOM. In 1965, Gene cut a record on his X-L label on a group called... Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Every label he took the record to turned him down. However, Gene believed in this song and ran off 1,000 copies and it soon became a regional hit. It also got the attention of MGM records. Thirty days after being released on the MGM label, this song had sold 1,000,000 copies. This song was a #1 hit in the United States and all over the world. And, it was #1 on the charts in Germany for 42 straight weeks! This song is now a pop classic and its title is “Wooly Bully”! Once the Sounds of Memphis Studio, production companies and Beckie Publishing had attracted national and international notice, MGM and Sounds of Memphis entered into a joint agreement. Over the next few years close to 100 songs were released on the MGM and MGM/SOM labels. In 1984, the SOM studio and publishing companies were each sold separately. Although the studio has changed hands (and names) over the last few years, the publishing company was sold and continues to be owned and operated by Linda Lucchesi, Gene’s daughter. Linda formed Simply Grand Music, Inc. whose catalog includes all of the songs from SOM Publishing, Beckie Publishing, Il Gatto and By-Gene which are affiliated with BMI. In addition, Linda formed Memphis Town Music, Inc. which is affiliated with ASCAP.

ThinkSay Records staff was assembled with the goal of pairing the muscle of a major label and the agility/attention to detail of an independent label. The philosophy that we use in selecting artists, staff, and business partners is very simple – exceptionally talented people who understand the importance of demonstrating hard work and passion in everything they do. Our hope is that these shared ideals between our artist, and staff will continue to allow us to reach more fans, evolve, and form lasting relationships with new business partners in technology, media and entertainment.

Perhaps more so than any other, Tommy Boy epitomizes the ideal independent record label, with one glaring exception: success. Tommy Boy achieved it; most did not. Since the independent record label rush of the early 1980’s, most companies have faded into obscurity, but Tommy Boy remained important and has consistently released high quality music by innovating, not imitating trends, and the results are clear. Besides gaining respect from cutting-edge fans, DJs, and audiophiles worldwide, Tommy Boy is among the largest self-distributed labels in America with numerous multi-platinum and gold records to its credit.

The Tuff Gong label was founded in 1965 by Bob Marley, with the vision of producing, distributing and promoting his music free from the constraints of corporate label politics. In a time decades before artist-owned record labels were commonplace, the legendary Bob Marley’s vision was characteristically well ahead of its time. Now, nearly a half-century later, his dream is being realized. With Tuff Gong Worldwide, Ziggy Marley continues a dream of his father to own and manage not only his own music, but nearly every aspect of his career. From record label operations to book publishing, Ziggy not only records and releases all of his recent solo studio albums and DVDs via Tuff Gong Worldwide (including the Grammy-winning albums Love Is My Religion and Family Time, and the new release Wild and Free), but also has become a major player in the comic book / graphic novel industry with the release of the MarijuanaMan series. With such distribution partners as Image Comics, Entertainment One in the U.S. and Canada and a variety of distributors and label imprints around the world, Tuff Gong Worldwide's reach has become, indeed, a global phenomenon. Most recently, Tuff Gong Worldwide has expanded beyond consumer products and into the world of television with Marley Africa Road Trip (Elixir Films). Even more new developments will be announced in 2012. Since its inception in 2005, Tuff Gong Worldwide has established itself as a leader in the reggae community. Having consulted on such projects as The Disney Reggae Club (Walt Disney Records) and MARLEY (Shangri-La Entertainment), the company has become a sought-after expert in tapping into reggae culture. With unprecedented access to reggae creatives (artists, musicians, songwriters, etc.), Caribbean media (radio, online, press), and other promotional outlets, Tuff Gong Worldwide finds itself at the center of reggae culture in North America, the Caribbean, and beyond.
