GroupSince 1987, Naxos has redefined how classical music is presented and marketed. Innovative strategies of recording exciting new repertoire with exceptional talent have enabled the label to develop one of the largest and fastest growing catalogues of unduplicated repertoire available anywhere--currently over 2500 titles--with state-of-the-art sound and consumer-friendly prices. Naxos is the brainchild of Klaus Heymann, a German-born entrepreneur and music lover based in Hong Kong. To boost the sales for his electronics equipment company, Heymann began organising concerts of classical music in Hong Kong sponsored by Bose and Revox. When visiting artists involved in the concerts discovered that their records could not be found in Hong Kong shops, record distribution became an additional enterprise of Heymann's company. Another result of the classical concerts was Heymann's marriage to Takako Nishizaki, a world-class Japanese violinist. Heymann decided to make recordings with Nishizaki, one of the first recordings being The Butterfly Lovers Concerto. The recording met with immediate success and sold hundreds of thousands of copies across Asia, compelling Heymann to start HK, a record label devoted to Chinese symphonic music. Success continued, and the desire to record Western repertoire blossomed into Marco Polo, a label offering primarily rare symphonic repertoire composed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. When manufacturing costs of compact discs dropped in 1986, Klaus Heymann saw an opportunity for a budget-priced CD label-a label that could offer customers classical CDs for the same price as LPs. The first Naxos releases were a success, and the young, independent label began to build its catalogue by recording standard repertoire with young or unknown artists. As the popularity of Naxos began to increase with little or no competition from the major labels, the company developed into a full-fledged classical label offering a full range of classical music to beginners and collectors, with little or no duplication of repertoire. Naxos CDs today continue to retail at a cost similar to their original introductory prices. Costs are kept to a minimum by focusing on the music rather than the artist-money is not wasted on expensive artist promotions, and profits are invested into recordings of new music rather than multiple versions of standard repertoire already in the catalogue. Naxos recordings include complete cycles or cycles-in-progress of basic repertoire such as the complete works of Chopin or the complete string quartets of Haydn, but the label also has ventured into rarities and contemporary works, including recordings of repertoire by Joachim Raff, William Henry Fry, and Krzysztof Penderecki. Naxos is also active in the DVD business and now distributes Arthaus and BBC/Opus Arte DVDs world-wide as well as TDK in most major markets, and the company also has begun releasing recordings in the DVD-Audio format. Naxos has been aggressive in the development of educational and outreach materials, specifically designed to introduce new listeners to the joys of classical music. Two resources at the forefront of this effort are Naxos.com, the company's comprehensive music website complete with composer biographies and online listening, and Naxos AudioBooks, the award-winning label which incorporates Naxos recordings of music into fine readings of classic literature. The Naxos label also has gained stature by pioneering groundbreaking projects like the American Classics series. Currently numbering at about 100 titles, the series is set to be the most comprehensive recording project of American concert music ever attempted. Naxos is also leading the field with the landmark Naxos Historical Series. The releases in this massive restoration project are engineered by leading restoration engineers/artists. The series covers all genres of classical music as well as legends of jazz and pop music from the first half of the 20th Century. Other notable Naxos series include Japanese Classics, Spanish Classics, Early Music, Organ Encyclopaedia, the Guitar Collection, and Opera Classics. The catalogue of Naxos World, a pioneering world music label, includes international music of many different cultures and genres, folk, pop and classical alike. Through these and other accomplishments, Naxos has become the World's leading Classical Music label, garnering awards from major music publications including Gramophone Awards and numerous Editor's Choices, GRAMMY nominations, nominations and wins for the Cannes Classical Awards, and AFIM nominations and awards. Naxos offers music lovers a veritable encyclopaedia of music, all at an affordable price.Site Wide Tags: Classical

In 2012 PLR is set to release a collaboration album between Necro & the Legendary Kool G Rap, the group is called, The Godfathers. GroupAfter nearly a two and a half year hiatus, S-Curve – the record label that launched the career of Joss Stone and brought the world such hits as “Stacy’s Mom” and “Who Let the Dogs Out” – re-launched in 2007 as a full-service recording and music publishing company by our founder and CEO, Steve Greenberg. Our label has released many successful records since its re-launch in October 2007 including albums by alternative pop/rock band We The Kings, critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Diane Birch, teen punk rock trio Care Bears On Fire, power pop supergroup Tinted Windows and music icon Tom Jones. S-Curve returned with much of our original staff intact, including the veteran record executive and Grammy Award winning producer Greenberg, label President Steve Yegelwel and COO Marty Maidenberg. Marketing executives Jennifer Grossbach and Michael Collin also returned from the original staff, with promotion executives Brad Davidson and Dan Pearson joining us in our quest to bring terrific music to the world. At S-Curve, we like to make records that sound completely original. We’re not looking for the “next” anybody. We are interested in uniquely talented recording artists who can inspire passion and make listeners FEEL something! We love our artists and the records that we make and we hope that you will, too. We the Kings’ manager Brett Disend (who must know a thing or two because he also manages Boys like Girls and Metro Station) has this to say about us: “Having worked with the team from S-Curve in the past, I believe there is no one in the business with more focus and long term dedication to developing new artists. They’ve always had an incredible batting average with regard to breaking artists.” Thanks, Brett. In its first incarnation, S-Curve Records was founded in 2000 and entered the market with a bang with its first major release “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baha Men. The album went on to sell four million albums worldwide, win a Grammy Award, and become a pop culture phenomenon. Artists on S-Curve have sold over 14 million albums, including hits such as “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne, “Check Yes, Juliet” by We The Kings and the first two albums by British soul singer Joss Stone. We hope you enjoy our artists’ music. And please remember to buckle up for safety. It’s the law.

GroupThroughout its rich history, the recording industry has produced genuine and innovative independent label owners. It has been said, Fred Munao, founder and CEO of Select Records since 1981, is among the best of those urban and pop music pioneers. Over the last two decades, Munao has been responsible for breaking chart-topping, genre elevating acts such as UTFO, Kid 'N Play , The Real Roxanne, Chubb Rock , Whistle, and AMG. Other past roster artists include the platinum act The Jerky Boys, revolutionary rap group M.O.P., R&B diva Nerissa, charismatic dancehall heartthrob Shawnie Ranks, and alternative rocker Mike Peters , ex-lead singer/songwriter of The Alarm . Select expects the next generation of artists to continue the ongoing success the label has endured. "Our success can be attributed to an emphasis on artist growth and development, which was clearly reflected in the expansive careers of acts like UTFO, Kid 'N Play, and Chubb Rock," the Brooklyn, New York born and raised Munao explains. "For us, in addition to having hit singles and albums, longevity is also a key focus. When readying an artist for release we are always thinking in terms of artist staying power. Therefore, we constantly work on and encourage our artists to hone their writing, recording and performance skills. Some even develop strong studio production ability. All of this, he further informs, "adds up to distinctive, self-contained artists, whose true talent and mass appeal can be limitless." Munao's pre-Select days were filled with memories and experiences that helped shape his current success. His father was a musician whose band became local favorites around the family's close knit Brooklyn neighborhood. "My dad encouraged me to play an instrument but I couldn't get into that, although I loved music per se," Munao recounts. "The recording end of it fascinated me though. Even way back then I remember wondering why certain records were hits and others were not. I must have been vocal about it too, because one day a record producer friend of my father's said I should be in the business." Although he didn't respond immediately, a summer or so later, Munao went to work at his dad's friend's production company. He became its (non paid) general manager. However, in lieu of salary, the invaluable knowledge and experience he gained during his tenure there, and later working at music publishing companies, set the tone and the table for his next pivotal career move-artist management. Munao successfully managed two rock acts in the late 70's. The hottest was a Boston based group called the Atlantics, which he took from total obscurity to touring with such rock legends as Roxy Music, Cheap Trick, and Boston. Despite the group's popularity during the "New Wave Rock" era, Fred's dissatisfaction with the lack of label attention to the Atlantics planted the seeds for him to start his own independent label. "My feeling was that I could do it just as bad as the majors," he advised. "Yes, marketing, promotion, and distribution all sound pretty complicated and difficult to do on your own, but I never thought I couldn't do it. I knew good timing was also important, and that it's hard for any label, major or otherwise, to work too many acts. From the beginning my focus was on the quality of the artist and the music, not the quantity of acts I could have on my roster." In 1981, in a New York City apartment, Select Records was born. The brain¬ child of Munao and Joseph Fleury, Select has since evolved into a force in the world¬wide record industry. While searching for the perfect niche that would make Select what it is today, the label started out with its hand in a bit of everything. With the very first signings of such diverse acts like The Swinging Madisons (rock), B.J. Johann (country/ pop), Gary Private and Earle Mankey (pop), Select was making noise. About a year later, Fred Munao "hit the streets" and discovered what rap music was about. With a new direction in mind, rap being the focus, UTFO was signed. UTFO, considered as one of the forefathers of rap, carved a path for many others to follow. Daring to mix rap with the heavy metal sounds of Anthrax, this group kept with the Select maxim of originality as well as accessibility. Practicing the early methods of the original A&R function, Select put its feelers out and quickly developed a roster impressive enough to catch the attention of public and industry professionals alike. Soon to follow was an industry explosion of rap records, with Select in the thick of things. Response records became the new rage. Select artist The Real Roxanne, hit the charts with her response to UTFO's hit, "Roxanne, Roxanne." With the right marketing techniques and the proper backing, Select made Roxanne more than a fad. She became one of the first female rap stars. Select has nurtured and developed many acts, bringing them to the top level of excellence and notoriety. One of many success stories for Select is the group Whistle, a hit rap group with the smash single, "Just Buggin'. Whistle has accomplished the much desired position of a Top Ten/Crossover act. Whistle is now recognized as an influential R&B group and praised for their harmonizing talents. One of the most familiar names in rap history is Kid 'N Play. Kid 'N Play have yielded many hit singles and gold records for Select. These stars of stages became stars of screen as well. With the "House Party" movie series came an even greater level of success, surely earning Kid 'N Play the title of most recognized rap duo in the world. Originally starting with the concept of producing EP's only, Select had moved on to produce hit albums and singles as well as EP's. In fact, Select had expanded so much that it started Active Records for its dance acts and Mondo Music for the heavy metal acts. Although Select has stayed in touch with its founding premise of diversity and originality, it has maintained a focus for marketability. Select product can be found in every major chain store, as well as popular "Mom and Pop" music stores. Select product is distributed through ADA and is well accepted in major cities internationally as well. Through the intense efforts of Fred Munao and the specialized staff Select has produced over the years, Select had risen from a concept to a reality. It had carved a name for itself in record history, and will continue to venture into new and exciting areas. As long as there are new and creative artists, Select will be there, influencing the course of music and trends for others to follow.

GroupIn the early 1960’s, Eugene (Gene) Lucchesi, Sr. founded The Sounds of Memphis Studio and productions. Over the next few years his company started several publishing companies: Beckie Publishing, Il Gatto, Sounds of Memphis and By-Gene Music; all Tennessee Corporations. He also started his own recording labels: Crystal, X-L, Pen and SOM. In 1965, Gene cut a record on his X-L label on a group called... Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Every label he took the record to turned him down. However, Gene believed in this song and ran off 1,000 copies and it soon became a regional hit. It also got the attention of MGM records. Thirty days after being released on the MGM label, this song had sold 1,000,000 copies. This song was a #1 hit in the United States and all over the world. And, it was #1 on the charts in Germany for 42 straight weeks! This song is now a pop classic and its title is “Wooly Bully”! Once the Sounds of Memphis Studio, production companies and Beckie Publishing had attracted national and international notice, MGM and Sounds of Memphis entered into a joint agreement. Over the next few years close to 100 songs were released on the MGM and MGM/SOM labels. In 1984, the SOM studio and publishing companies were each sold separately. Although the studio has changed hands (and names) over the last few years, the publishing company was sold and continues to be owned and operated by Linda Lucchesi, Gene’s daughter. Linda formed Simply Grand Music, Inc. whose catalog includes all of the songs from SOM Publishing, Beckie Publishing, Il Gatto and By-Gene which are affiliated with BMI. In addition, Linda formed Memphis Town Music, Inc. which is affiliated with ASCAP.

GroupIn the 1990s VP Records was born from the VP music stores as reggae - especially dancehall reggae - was experiencing a surge in crossover popularity. VP Records quickly became the go-to label for dancehall reggae acts as well as other Caribbean musicians looking for an inroad in North American markets. The label grew quickly and was awarded Best Independent Label twice by Billboard within its first nine years of operation. Today it is difficult to think of an internationally known reggae musician who hasn't at least passed through VP - after all, the label regularly releases a whopping 60 albums per year. Although they certainly release single artist full lengths, compilation albums are a major part of the VP approach. The label uses their long running series of comps, Dancehall 101, Reggae Anthology, and Strictly The Best, as both introductions to Caribbean music and culture to new fans and as ways for dedicated fans up on the latest music emerging from the islands between full lengths from their favorites. The Reggae Anthology series in particular includes in depth liner notes to give fans a deeper look into Caribbean musicians, who often receive very little coverage in the music media outside of the islands.
