Direct To Fan Business Strategy White Paper

Part of the role of A2IM’s New Media Committee (NMC) is to help its members navigate through the often choppy (and confusing) waters of the digital & new media landscape.

To that end, we embarked on a project a few months ago to deliver a series of ‘White Papers’ where we aim to present members with a short guide to some best practices, as well as a bit of a roadmap for improving your company’s marketing in these realms.

Today, we manufacture over 2 million CDRs per year in order sizes from one to 300 for music labels, independent artists and book publishers. We are the on-demand manufacturer for ArkivMusic, and we do many short runs for TuneCORE, including direct-to-consumer shipping. The Value of Music

Clearly one of the biggest issues, if not the biggest issue, facing the music industry is that consumers are not respecting music and the need to compensate the creators of musical intellectual property. They also treat music as a commodity they are entitled to by right and the level of appreciation of music has declined. At this point we want to turn this issue over to a guest columnist, Rob Miller of A2IM member Bloodshot Records, for his view on the current “fan” view of music called “Music as Dumpster Pizza”, reprinted with Rob’s permission. Is Ellen DeGeneres Using Your Music Without A License?

It was reported this month that some of the world’s largest recording companies are suing “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” claiming producers violated their copyrights by playing more than 1,000 songs without permission. A2IM is interested to know whether any of your music was similarly used by this TV show. If so, please write jim.mahoney@a2im.org with the names of the songs (and artists) that were used without license along with any specific information you may have relating to the usage (i.e. air date, what segment the song was used, whether anyone from the show’s Telepictures Productions had ever contacted you to obtain a license, etc.).
